The kawashkar lived between the Gulf of Penas to about Paso or Cockburn Channel in the western part of Tierra del Fuego, also occupying most of the Straits of Magellan, to the southern entrance of the Canal Sarmiento. This area corresponds to southern labyrinthine archipelagos, where the range is almost impassable, the essentially intractable by its absence islands beaches and density Magellanic forest. Channels, about 480 kilometers long, are almost all calm and navigable waters. The weather here is rainy and there are only two seasons: winter, when the thermometer varies between 0 ° and -5 ° C and summer temperatures not exceeding 10 ° CThe kawashkar belongs to fuéguidas languages, along with the Yamana and selk'nam, that among them were mutually unintelligible without apparent genealogical relationship. It is a polysynthetic and agglutinative language, where nouns are spoken or subjectivize, forming complex words equivalent to Spanish sentences. In their vocabulary are important conditions of the environment, the flora and fauna of Patagonia. A specific name for it is unknown, but is referred to as afséksta meaning "talk, talk". Currently little is spoken, being to the point of extinction.
